Assessment accommodation

We are seeking a MSc student interested in forest, field, and wetland carbon accounting. The successful candidate will join a team at the Western University, University of New Brunswick and Natural Resources Canada – Canadian Forest Service who are developing a long-term strategic-level forest management plan for a military base. The plan will accommodate military training needs, carbon storage, fire risk, and other indicators of sustainability while considering the effects of climate change. Forest and field carbon accounting are a part of this management plan and the MSc student’s work will contribute to this effort by collecting information on how historical and current land use decisions have influenced soil carbon stocks.

The purpose of the work is to develop a better understanding of the current amount of carbon stored and how management activities could promote or reduce carbon storage in the future. The project can take advantage of extensive data gathered by the Canadian Forest Service, including forest inventories and historical maps of land use dating back to the 1950’s. The project will apply carbon budget models for forest stands to determine how forest composition and the presence of non-native earthworms influence soil carbon. The successful candidate is encouraged to develop research questions independently related to how novel forest management objectives can be met within a traditional planning environment. The project provides an opportunity to develop novel indicators and methods to monitor those indicators for a unique planning environment. Results from this work will be used to inform land management locally, and to inform a national strategy for land management on military bases.
